Re-Elect Mayor John Hieftje

Protecting our Neighborhoods

“Thanks to Mayor Hieftje and the Clean Communities program, our neighborhoods and streets are cleaner. John is working hard to protect our neighborhoods. He has earned my vote for re-election.”

— Gwen Nystuen, neighborhood activist

Mayor Hieftje’s Clean Communities program is responsible for more than 6,000 property clean-ups. The new curb carts keep our neighborhoods & streets cleaner and make trash pick-up more efficient.

Protecting and preserving the character of Ann Arbor’s wonderful neighborhoods is one of Mayor Hieftje’s passions. He was standing up for Ann
Arbor neighborhoods even before he was elected to office. His work as a neighborhood and environmental activist is what led his own neighbors to
insist he run for public office back in 1999. He has never forgotten these roots.

Mayor Hieftje believes that downtown building height must be considered in
the context of surrounding buildings and the neighborhood. He voted against the too-tall Gallery project on N. Main that would have towered over the Farmers Market and the residential neighborhood.

John Hieftje’s rule: A proposal that is opposed by a clear majority of the residents in a neighborhood should not be forced upon those people, unless there is no other way to accomplish something that would be good for the community as a whole.

John has shown remarkable leadership and skill in a tough budget environment. He has reduced the cost and increased the efficiency of city government, while assuring that the city’s most important work is performed at a high standard. We are fortunate to have a mayor who has both progressive vision and a commitment to spend our tax dollars wisely.
